The Edwin W. Pauley Summer Program in Marine Biology
The Edwin W. Pauley Summer Program in Marine Biology is a graduate-level research and training program which draws faculty and students from around the world. Each summer, a new topic is chosen to be the focus of that program’s research. Announcements concerning the topic of the summer program are made approximately in March each year.
Since the inception of the Pauley Summer Program in 1983, there have been over 300 student participants from 28 countries and 6 continents. In addition, US faculty and students have come from over 27 different states to participate in the Summer Program. Approximately 94% of student participants have gone on to pursue a career in marine science.
A wide range of scientific topics have been covered during the past Pauley Summer Programs including coral biology, fish endocrinology, marine mammal audiometry, plankton community dynamics, elasmobranch ecology, marine disease, and aquaculture.
The Hawai’i Institute of Marine Biology is located on Moku o Loʻe, in Kane’ohe Bay, Oahu. It includes student dormitories, temporary faculty residence suites, a large state-of-the-art laboratory, a fleet of boats for conducting field work, and a surrounding coral reef. Students and faculty typically live on Coconut Island for the duration of the Pauley Summer Program.
